The Creative Writing Program & the Latina/o Studies Program are proud to present “The Theatrics of PUPPETRY,” featuring artists Marianne Gingher and Anechy Padron.
UNC Professor Marianne Gingher writes fiction and non-fiction, and in 2009 along with her collaborator Deborah Seabrooke founded Jabberbox Puppet Theater, a venue specializing in salon-style puppetry for adults. Their summer 2017 show was Beauty and the Botanist, a musical based on a short story by Fred Chappell about the famous Swedish botanist, Carl Linnaeus, a magical plant, and a young woman who defies 18th c. discriminatory attitudes against women who pursue the study of botany.
Anechy Padron is a Cuban actress-puppeteer. She traveled and toured with the Circus in Havana and in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, and she taught performing arts in an after-school program for children in her neighborhood in Havana. She also worked in various Havana theaters including the Puppet Guiñol Nacional, a national children’s puppet theatre company well known throughout Cuba. Ms. Padron now makes her home here in North Carolina.
The event is free and open to the UNC community and to the public.
