The Southern Folklife Collection in the Wilson Special Collections Library will celebrate its 25th anniversary with three days of music, lectures, readings, and dining on the UNC campus, August 21 to 23.
Headline concerts by Tift Merrit and Merle Haggard will cap off the festivities that will also include a New Orleans brass band symposium, a traditional New Orleans-style second line parade, an exhibition about the Southern Folklife Collection, and a gala benefit dinner featuring a menu created by James Beard Award-winning chefs from the Triangle.
In its quarter century, the Southern Folklife Collection has grown into one of the nation’s foremost archives of Southern vernacular music, art, and culture. Its collections have inspired artists as diverse as Dom Flemons of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
