Renzo Ortega (1974) began his artistic career in the art and underground music scene of his native Lima-Perú. Later he emigrated to the United States, he lived and worked in New York for over sixteen years. In the fall of 2016, Renzo relocated to Carrboro, North Carolina. He received a BFA in painting from La Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Perú (1999), studied at the Art Students League of New York (2000-04), he is a visionary founder member and was the artistic director of Local Project, a not-for-profit art organization in Queens, New York and has his MFA in painting from Hunter College (2014). His artwork has been exhibited in solo and group shows in US, Perú, Austria, and Chile. He participated in the Works on Paper: 2017 Exhibition at The Weatherspoon Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in the S-Files Biennial (El Museo del Barrio, NY 2007) and Queens International Biennial (Queens Museum of Art 2006). In 2013, as a Kossak Travel Grant recipient, Ortega traveled to Berlin to study German Expressionism. His recent curatorial work and projects are “25 Bienal de Pintura Centroamerica y el Caribe” in Honduras, “Stamp manifest” at Gowanus Print Lab, “Deep Breath” exhibition at Local Project, “InQbate” Sound Artist Residency at the Queens Museum of Art and the series of artist talks “The Impossible Project” at Reverse Art Space. In 2015, Ortega produced a body of screen-printing work at Gowanus Print Lab in Brooklyn. This work was exhibited at his solo exhibition in Lima, Peru at Galería Fundación Euroidiomas. In 2016 Renzo Ortega received the Queens Council on the Arts New Work Award and also traveled to Honduras as a part of the U.S. Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Envoy Program. His recent solo exhibition “Journey to Infinity” was in January 2017 at The Flushing Town Hall Gallery in Queens, New York. In March 2017 Renzo Ortega was an artist in residency at ArtSpread in Detroit. In September 2017 participated in a Bi-Personal Exhibition, with NC artist Antoine WiIliams at Greenhill Center for NC Arts in Greensboro.
