Water + Health
What is the link between water and health?
Dr Greg Allgood, who leads World Vision’s work to address the global water crisis, will highlight the critical link between provision of clean water and effectively addressing major global health priorities including malnutrition and HIV/AIDS. Not only has recent research shown that clean water and improved hygiene and sanitation can dramatically impact malnutrition and HIV/AIDS, but efforts are underway to scale-up proven clean water interventions in more cost effective and clinically effective ways than can be achieved by addressing these priorities individually.
Dr Allgood is Vice President of World Vision where he is part of the world’s largest non-governmental effort to provide clean drinking water in the developing world. He recently retired from Procter & Gamble (P&G) after a nearly 27 year career. At P&G, Allgood created and led the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program, a program that has provided more than 6 billion liters of clean drinking water and prevented an estimated 250 million days of illness. Allgood also leveraged the program to build P&G’s global reputation and has been recognized as a Conde Nast Visionary, a co-winner of the Economist Social Innovation Award, and a Distinguished Alumni of the Year by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Under his leadership, the CSDW Program won the US Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence, the Ron Brown US Presidential Award for Corporate Citizenship, and the Stockholm Industry Water Award.
