Description: The socially and intellectually ambitious Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) is often described as the quintessential "humanist artist," but this is in relation to a later, 19th-century ideal of humanism, with manual arts subordinated to the arts of writing. In these lectures, Mantegna's painting reveals itself as a form of discourse that addressed a 15th-century "crisis in the humanities," and – rather than imitating – provided an often striking and radical model for poetry, history, and rhetoric.
